Brief Synopsis:
Gene and Pat ride to the rescue of a young man framed for murder by a vicious sheriff.
Detailed Synopsis:
U.S. Marshals Gene Autry and Pat Buttram follow the trail of escaped criminal Randy Barker, a crack rifle shot, accused of killing the sheriff. The cowboys find that the "outlaw" is nothing more than a hapless lad framed by brutal Al Broderick, who was a deputy and is now the sheriff. Believing the boy's story, they return with him to Mesa, his hometown, and take refuge in his twin sister Peggy's laundry. Gene sets out to prove Randy's innocence. He spends the night in jail under the iron rule of the sadistic Broderick and learns that the former sheriff was found with three bullet wounds. Because Randy is a sharpshooter and would only use one shot, Gene believes he has the evidence he needs. He and Randy head to the judge's house to prove Randy's shooting ability, but the judge still needs more. Utilizing the judge's hobby of telephone equipment, Gene sets up a microphone from the jail to the laundry. Randy goes back to jail and goads a confession out of Broderick, who, thinking he is alone with the captive, talks and is heard by Judge Stone and Gene. Broderick framed Randy because he wanted the Barkers' ranch. During the capture of the sheriff, Randy proves his prowess with a rifle, and Pat proves his capacity for getting into his usual trouble.
