Detailed Synopsis:
On the way to Blue Mesa, insurance investigators Gene Autry and Pat Buttram save young Tom Jackson from being hanged by three heavies. Tom gets away, and Gene and Pat ride into town to meet with banker Ed Hadley and his wife, Marie. Gene and Pat are investigating the bank's losses, which resulted from a series of stage robberies. They learn from the crippled Hadley that Tom Jackson is behind the trouble, so Pat gets a job as a cook at the café Tom runs with his sister, Sally. The Jacksons claim that Hadley killed their father, a partner in the bank, and stole their estate. Later, Tom overhears Idaho, the stage driver, telling Pat about the money he is carrying. Hoping to surprise the robber, Pat looks for Gene, who was knocked unconscious. Meanwhile, Tom has gone after the stage, but Gene, now revived, overtakes him and they surprise the heavies, who get away after a fight. Later they see the stage held up by the real outlaw, the Black Rider, who escapes, only leaving an empty suitcase. Gene figures out that his insurance company has been tricked into paying phony claims and trails the Black Rider back to the bank. Suspecting Hadley, he tips off Pat. They deliberately try to run down Hadley, making him jump from his wheelchair. After a knockdown drag-out fight, Hadley is captured, Marie confesses, and the estate is returned to the Jacksons.
